Jon Manousos

From Friends

The Bug” appeared to be the ringleader of the endless card game in the Common Room on the first floor of Burbank House, my Freshman dorm.

Obituary from San Francisco Chronicle December15, 2005.

MANOUSOS, Jon Evans – Most affectionately known as “The Bug,” has died suddenly and unexpectedly at the age of 64. He is survived by his son Alexander; daughter, Melissa; brother, Nicholas, and daughter-in-law, Lesley. Extraordinarily proud of his Greek heritage, he was the son of Angelo and Georgia (Shilaos) Manousos of Seattle, WA.

He leaves behind a legion of fascinated and bemused friends and acquaintances who will miss his vast knowledge of music-especially obscure R&B artists, jazz hipsters, and early rock and roll icons-and his never ending commentary on all things political and cultural. Jon had deeply held opinions on nearly everything, but enthusiastically embraced a large and eclectic assortment of friends.

He was a graduate of Stanford Univ, where he earned a scholarship at the tender age of 17, but stayed to enjoy the academic atmosphere and basement poker games until his 30th year. He was a voracious reader consuming everything from Aristophanes to the New Yorker. He also loved to consume good food, and was an accomplished cook, especially known for his Greek salads.

A Greek Orthodox service will be held 1:30 PM, Saturday, December 17 at the Cathedral of the Ascension, 4700 Lincoln Ave, Oakland, with a gathering at the home of Kimberly Breeze immediately following. Contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to the ACLU.
