Mom and Pop’s store

From Family and Hollywood cultural embededness

My father was always a collector, and eventually my mother joined the fun. When I was  living at home before I went away to college in 1962 he had

  • An incredible collection of jazz 78s with which he could expound on the history of jazz.

  • “Mint condition” matchbooks from the classic restaurants of Los Angeles.

  • An autograph book with personalized messages from all the stars from the Hal Roach studios, where his father ran the film lab.

  • Commemorative programs from all the college football bowl games that he sent away for every year.

  • A library of perfect condition late 19th and early 20th century physical education books by pioneers in the field.

  • Abiut a dozen pre-electric windup cylinder players and record players some with megaphone speakers he had pin-striped by iconic car customizer von Dutch.

To make a long story short, in 1967 they opened a shop on Ventura Boulevard called the Nickelodeon. Here’s a great appreciation  of their store and one of their major collection areas — Disneyana and The Mouse Club.
