I enrolled in school the first two quarters when I got back from the summer trip cross country, but I didn’t pass any classes that “third year”.

The Vipers played some parties on campus. A highlight of the year, and of my whole counterculture plunge, was in October when I went up to Kesey’s (pictured above as recently restored) with Norman just as Ginsberg, Cassady, and Orlovsky pulled into the driveway. (See An Afternoon at Kesey’s, below). Then on December 10 the Vipers played to open the first show Bill Graham ever held at the Fillmore Auditorium. On December 12 we went to see Bob Dylan and The Band at San Jose Civic Auditorium. And on December 18 I went to the Acid Test at the Big Beat club near Palo Alto.

The “Third Year” at Stanford continued with Winter Quarter 1966. But since I didn’t even attend any classes and took my official Leave from the university, I include it in the next section, Transition from College to Bands
