LEAVE
This quarter marked the ending of my time as a Stanford student. I registered for classes, but sometime during the quarter I had my exit interview from the University.
My two last memories were, first, visiting the bookstore several times to read snatches of Zen Flesh, Zen Bones, which I had read at home earlier. I was very aware that I was ritualizing the last tenuous thread between me and the great university.
The other memory was a brief conversation with Norman Linke and Carrie Heldman. They asked me what I’m going to do with my life now. I answered “I’m going to be a Zen Master”. These two supremely impractical people looked at me skeptically and said something like “That’s not very realistic.”
And I believe very shortly after that John Zerzan and I looked on the job board at Stanford and went together to work at the Shell Refinery in Martinez. Also during this quarter I took LSD on three occasions, and saw John Coltrane’s intense double quartet the day after participating fully at the Trips Festival.
